Halfworlds Review

Halfworlds Season 1 Review

Halfworlds is a dark fantasy thriller television series produced and created by HBO Asia. Set in present-day Asia, the series reveals an underground society populated by demons from Asian folklore. Here is my mostly filler free review about the series

Premise

Set in the city of Jakarta in Indonesia – Halfworlds Season 1 lifts the veil on a parallel world of bloodthirsty creatures from Indonesian mythology who have lived amongst humans for centuries. They are known simply as “Demit” and have been carefully concealed by a powerful family of mortals. The arrival of the Gift, a mysterious supernatural event, causes this hidden world to reveal itself. As the day of the Gift draws near, Sarah, a street artist, finds herself caught between the worlds of human and Demit. Once the Demit find out who she really is, and what she must do, the delicate balance between the two worlds will be shaken forever.

The interesting thing about the series for me is that it has only 8 episodes with running time of 30 minutes and every season will have its own story, season 2 for example takes place in Thailand with different characters, but the same mythological world stays the same. Ive been always somewhat critical about when you have too many episodes or too few, this one has the latter problem. First 6 episodes do a bit of a build up in the story and then lot of happens in last 2 episodes where bunch of people die and decisions are made.

Series suffers somewhat from good phasing, but has rather nice Cartoon CGI though along with nice fighting scenes. Also i did like the setting that Halfworlds created, while it maybe didn’t execute it as strongly, however i have faith that season 2 will do a bit better job on that.

The series is currently available on HBO Nordic & HBO GO which you can sign up for a trial here http://amzn.to/2hlRknv
